Nursing professions, establishment of an office in accordance with the Nursing Professions Act

Nursing will be governed in future by a new Nursing Professions Act (PflBG) which will enter into force by 20 January 2020. This means that the nursing professions will no longer be subject to the regulatory mechanisms of the Vocational Training Act (BBiG) and the Crafts and Trades Regulation Code (HwO). Regulatory work will be undertaken by a Specialist Committee convened by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ) and the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG). This committee will receive support from an office established within Division 2.6 pursuant to the Nursing Professions Act.

As well as fulfilling this regulatory remit, Division 2.6 will carry out tasks within the spheres of public relations, research and ongoing monitoring of the nursing professions.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Processing of fundamental issues relating to the structure and content of vocational and higher education nursing training and to the nursing profession
  • Structural and curricular development of regulatory instruments for nursing training, maintenance of the Office of the Specialist Commission in accordance with the Nursing Professions Act 
  • Public relations work, development of support provision for practice
  • Ongoing monitoring of implementation of vocational and higher education nursing training
  • Extramural research into vocational and higher education nursing training and the nursing profession
