Examination and Certification in Denmark

Tests and exams mirror the objectives of each VET programme. Consequently, exams vary from programme to programme. Both formative and summative assessments are used throughout the programme to monitor student progress and to support the student as a learner. There are different kinds of exams: oral, written, oral and project-based, and a journeyman’s test.

All exams must reflect the extent to which the goals and objectives are being met. The local curriculum must state what kind of exams or tests are required to obtain the qualification.

Tests and exams are typically organised by the VET college. The trade committee is responsible for the journeyman’s test, though the actual test is agreed in cooperation between the trade committee and the VET college. The trade committee chooses the external examiners, and they also pay all the costs related to their participation in the test.

After the successful termination of a school period, participants receive a school certificate (skolebevis). After finishing the whole programme, students receive an education certificate, including the school certificate, the placement certificate (based on the placement statement and/or logbook), a letter of trade and, if appropriate, the journeyman’s certificate. Certificates will in most cases be issued by the VET college or in some cases by the trade committee. The education certificate verifies that the apprentice is now a skilled worker and can be employed accordingly.
