Alina Shirshikova

Stay at the BIBB

01.11.2021 - 30.04.2022

Professional Background

Alina Shirshikova is a PhD candidate at the Research Centre for Education and the Labour Market (ROA) at the School of Business and Economics of Maastricht University. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Economics from Lomonosov Moscow State University and Master's degree in Economics from the University of Bonn. Prior to joining ROA she worked as a research assistant to support empirical labour market research in the Institute of Labor Economics (IZA). Her research interests lie primarily in the fields of Labour, Migration and Development Economics.

Research interest

Alina's research focuses on investigation of obstacles to cross-border mobility and integration of immigrants. Under supervision of Prof. Frank Cörvers (ROA), Prof. Raymond Montizaan (ROA) and Prof. Harald Pfeifer (BIBB and ROA) she explores what institutional barriers are associated with transnational mobility of workers, addressing such topics as discrimination on the labour market, identity building and information frictions.

In her first paper Alina uses data from the BIBB Qualification panel 2021 to investigate ethnic diversity in the labor market entry positions. Together with the BIBB team she conducted a factorial experiment to analyze whether particular skills of the candidate or characteristics of employers can alleviate potential discriminatory hiring practices.
