Although equivalence between vocational and higher education is a pressing policy endeavour, the objective remains unachieved in reality. This issue of BWP looks at the reasons for the differing degrees of esteem and investigates why these are so difficult to surmount.
BWP shows solidarity with Ukraine and adapts its cover for this issue. In terms of content it investigates the question as to the ways in which greater flexibility is useful or even necessary for an effective and modern VET system without, however, jettisoning fundamental principles.

Dr. Volker Rein to complete research secondment in the USA
For a period of three months Dr. Rein (BIBB) will conduct research on the subject of “Compatible degree and non-degree post-secondary education in the US“ at the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS) in Washington DC .
Dual higher education study – upwards trend carries on
The latest evaluation of the BIBB database "TrainingPlus" shows: For the first time more than 100,000 students undertake a dual course of study. A constant growth in programme provision and companies offering training places has also been recorded.
Higher education doubters and their view of vocational education and training
The article focuses on the perception of dual VET as a possible alternative to higher education study. The basis for the analysis is provided by the results of a student survey into the attractiveness of VET conducted by BIBB and the Department of Labour Economics at the University of Maastricht.
Reaching the goal via various educational pathways?
Bachelor courses of study offer the option of acquiring a degree within three years. The consequence of this could be that those who have completed VET will be competing with Bachelor graduates. A current BIBB research project investigates typical educational pathways in the commercial sector.

The Data Report includes comprehensive information and analyses on the development of initial and continuing vocational education and training in Germany. It supplements the annual Federal Government Report on Vocational Education and Training.
Higher education drop-outs welcome – but no special treatment is on offer
Companies are open towards providing training to higher education drop-outs. However, the vast majority of firms is against the concept of special training regulations and models for such persons. These are the results of a BIBB company survey presented in issue 2/2016 of the BIBB-Report.
BIBB student survey: Dual training attractive for those doubtful of higher education
Around a third of students doubt that they will successfully complete higher education. According to a survey conducted by the BIBB and the University of Maastricht, about 30% believe that training in the dual system is an attractive alternative.
BIBB increases networking with universities – Cooperation with FernUniversität Hagen
A cooperation agreement has now been concluded between the BIBB and the FernUniversität in Hagen. The particular focus of future collaboration will be on themes of "academisation of vocational education and training" and "qualification of training personnel".
