How can modules of the German dual VET system be transferred to the Indonesian context? BIBB accompanied a high-ranking delegation from Indonesia to a training centre in Berlin to discuss this question.

Vocational Education and Training was once again on the agenda during a delegation visit on 6 May 2024 in Berlin as part of the first Joint Economic and Investment Cooperation Forum between the German and Indonesian Ministries of Economic Affairs.

In this context, Luca Jelic, project manager in the Department “VET International” (Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training, BIBB), accompanied the Indonesian Deputy Minister for Digital Economy, Manpower and SMEs, Rudy Salahuddin, to the ABB training centre in Berlin-Reinickendorf. The state-of-the-art centre provides training in metal and electrical professions for apprentices from over 100 small and large companies, and prepares the apprentices for the requirements of Industry 4.0. The visit gave rise to an exciting discussion on the concept of joint inter-company training, the role of the state in financing VET, and its possible transferability to the Indonesian context.

These discussions were continued with the Coordinating Minster of Economic Affairs, Airllanga Hartarto, during a dinner hosted by the Indonesian Embassy.

Indonesia wants to develop into a leading industrial nation in terms of e-mobility and semiconductor technologies. This requires well-trained skilled workers. The dual vocational education and training model could be a suitable model for the future.
