Terms of the German VET system

The glossary is a source for terms and definitions which are used in the field of vocational education and training. Emphasis is placed on its usage in the context of the German dual system. The VET Glossary is a work in progress and updated and expanded on an ongoing basis.

A method of competency acquisition which employs print, radio, television, computer-based communications, satellite broadcasting, teleconferencing or other educational technologies which allows students to study on their own without having to regularly attend classes in conventional classrooms, or education imparted at a distance through communication media: radio, TV, telephone, correspondence, computer or video.

A dual course of study is defined as a course of study at a university with integrated vocational training or periods of practical experience in a company. It differs from traditional courses of study in its increased practical orientation. Another key feature are the two learning locations: university and business. Vocational practice and study are closely integrated with one another in terms of both organisation and curriculum.

Education or training combining periods in an educational institution or training centre and in the workplace. The alternance scheme can take place on a weekly, monthly or yearly basis. Depending on the country and applicable status, participants may be contractually linked to the employer and/or receive a remuneration. (Also referred to as Alternance training).
