European Vocational Skills Week 2018

From 5 to 9 November 2018, the European Vocational Skills Week takes place for the third time in a row. The European Commission’s initiative aims to make vocational education and training (VET) more attractive, to demonstrate the benefits and diversity of VET and to highlight the commitment of the various actors in VET.

The European Vocational Skills Week again takes place this year at national, regional and local level. Events and activities highlighting examples of excellence and quality in VET and further training are organised across Europe from September to December 2018. The main activities are held this year in Vienna. The programme in the first week of November includes a multi-stakeholder conference on VET and a celebration of the fifth anniversary of the European Training Alliance. The events in Vienna deal with the question of the role of VET in the future world of work. Digitalisation, competences in the 21st century, validation of non-formal and informal learning and the internationalisation of VET are key topics.

Under the heading “Distinct Scenario of VET in 2035”, Dr. Philipp Grollmann from the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) will present results from the research project "The changing nature and role of vocational education and training in Europe" at a workshop in Vienna on 8 November. It is the aim of the project to examine how VET in Europe is understood and defined by actors in their respective national contexts, how these definitions have changed and how these possible changes are reflected in political strategies, institutional solutions and didactic approaches.

Also on 8 November from 12:30 p.m. on there will be another edition of the online dialogue #TVETChat with Peter Rechmann from the German Office for International Cooperation in Vocational Education and Training (GOVET) at BIBB and Pooja Gianchandani on the subject of work-based learning.
