BIBB supports young academics from abroad

Hosting of German Chancellor fellows from India and the US

46/2015 | Bonn, 05.11.2015

The interest from abroad in Germany's dual system of vocational education and training remains high - also in the area of research. The Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) is therefore offering research stays for guest academics. From November two German Chancellor fellows from India and the USA are commencing work in the BIBB, and with the support of the organisation, will be conducting research over a full year into the German vocational education and training system. Their aim is to be able to take away models for action for developing dual elements in the vocational education and training system in their own country. Key questions here include how company-based participation in the education and training can be achieved, but also how German education and training providers might be able to support in the development of partnerships in the target country.

The two guest academics, Deeneaus Polk from the USA (29) and Manish Joshi (30) from India come to the BIBB with a BA in International Studies and an MA in Public Policy respectively. They are not alone in selecting the BIBB as host for a research stay. Foreign academics are continually using the opportunity in the BIBB - over the previous year it was for an average duration of around three weeks in each case. As part of this, guest academics are not only able to draw on the BIBB infrastructure, but can also benefit from the organisation's excellent network of individuals involved in the vocational education and training system in Germany, Europe and around the world. The BIBB data research centre (FDZ) is also very popular. Last year this provided BIBB data for further analysis in 115 projects.

The large number of guests who continually revisit the BIBB is also evidence of the interest from abroad in German vocational education and training. For example, last year we looked after more than 50 visitor groups with around 1200 participants from 29 countries, many of these coming from the Asian region.

Background information: The German Chancellor Fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation is created as a full scholarship. It is aimed at decision makers of the future, key individuals and initiators as well as young people with initial leadership experiences from a range of different areas of work such as politics, public administration, business, society and culture. In total, around 50 university graduates from Brazil, China, India, Russia and the US are given the chance to carry out a project in Germany as a guest with a partner they have selected themselves. The project is sponsored by the German Chancellor.
